My New Obsession: The #VanLife Movement
While finding myself stuck in care facilities and bedridden for several months, I needed something to keep my mind occupied and motivated. That’s when I stumbled upon the #VanLife movement—a community of people who have turned their vans into mobile homes, traveling on the open road while maintaining the comforts of home, including gaming setups. As someone who loves gaming and has always had a bit of wanderlust, discovering this lifestyle was a game-changer for me.
Discovering #VanLife: The Perfect Combo of Travel and Gaming
I came across several YouTubers who embraced the #VanLife lifestyle while also being avid gamers. It was like a light bulb went off in my head. Here were people living on the road, enjoying the freedom of travel, and still having room for great gaming setups. It was the perfect blend of adventure and tech that I’d been searching for. I instantly felt a strong connection to this lifestyle and started to dig deeper into it.
I wish I had known about this kind of thing sooner. Don’t get me wrong, my grandparents were into the RV lifestyle when they retired, and my mom had a passion for offroading, which I’m sure is where I got my love for adventure and the open road. But doing the RV thing never quite appealed to me. The cost, the size, and the difficulty of navigating a huge vehicle around always seemed like too much of a hassle.
Then I saw the amazing setups people have in single, mobile vans, and it looked perfect. Compact yet functional, these vans had everything you could need for life on the road—without the downsides of a massive RV. However, even this came with a bit of a catch for me.
The Height Challenge: Finding the Right Fit
There’s one major consideration I have if I ever get mobile again: my height. Even now, missing a few bits, I still stand at 6'7". If I’m going to live on the road, I need a van with enough standing height and bed length to accommodate me comfortably. I’ve been doing a lot of research into different vehicles, builds, and companies that offer custom van conversions. It’s been exciting to see how creative people get with their setups to maximize space and functionality.
Exploring Van Builds and Power Systems
One of the aspects of #VanLife that fascinates me the most is the tech and systems people use for their vans, especially when it comes to power. I’ve spent hours researching different power setups, from solar panels to batteries for power storage. A lot of people use a combination of solar panels, lithium batteries, and inverters to create sustainable, off-grid power solutions that allow them to run everything from lights to fridges, and of course, gaming consoles and PCs.
Seeing how people engineer these systems to be efficient, reliable, and sustainable is incredible. I’ve learned about various companies that specialize in van builds, offering everything from basic conversions to full-on custom builds that can cater to your specific needs—including more headroom and a longer bed for someone like me.
A New Driving Force: Getting Free and Hitting the Road
The idea of embracing #VanLife has become my driving force, giving me something to work towards every day. It’s the incentive that pushes me to get through physical therapy and recover as quickly as possible. The thought of being able to travel on my own terms, with my own living space and a solid gaming setup, keeps me motivated and focused.
I’ve found a sense of purpose in planning and dreaming about this life on the road. Getting free and diving into the #VanLife lifestyle is now at the core of almost everything I do. From researching vehicle options and power systems to exploring different van build companies, it’s become a passion that I can’t wait to make a reality.
Final Thoughts
Discovering the #VanLife movement has given me a new perspective on how I want to live my life. It combines my love for travel, gaming, and independence in a way that I never thought possible. If you’re someone who craves freedom, adventure, and the open road but doesn’t want to give up your tech comforts, this lifestyle might just be the perfect fit for you too.
Stay tuned as I continue to share my journey, research, and plans for making #VanLife a reality
