My Experience with the Nintendo Switch Lite: A Great Mobile Gaming Companion
As a mobile tech enthusiast, I've spent plenty of time exploring different devices that fit the nomadic lifestyle. One of the handhelds that have stuck with me over the years is the Nintendo Switch Lite. While it's true that the Switch Lite is starting to feel a bit dated, especially with rumors swirling about the next iteration or even a whole new console from Nintendo, it still remains one of my favorite portable gaming systems. It's compact, versatile, and an absolute delight for anyone who loves gaming on the go, especially if you're like me and have a passion for collecting JRPGs—both the classics and the newer titles.
Great for Collecting and Playing JRPGs
One of the biggest reasons I still love my Nintendo Switch Lite is the incredible library of games it offers, especially when it comes to JRPGs. From timeless classics like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest to newer hits like Xenoblade Chronicles and Octopath Traveler, the Switch has it all. My Switch Lite is practically full even with a 1TB SD card in it, loaded with an extensive collection of games that provide endless hours of entertainment. If you are a fan of role-playing games, especially those from Japan, the Switch Lite is still a fantastic platform to dive deep into these vast and immersive worlds.
Why I Wish I’d Chosen the Full Switch
That said, if I could go back in time, I would have spent the extra money on the full-size Nintendo Switch instead of the Lite version. Don’t get me wrong—the Switch Lite is a solid choice if you’re looking for a compact, handheld-only experience. However, having the ability to dock the console and use it in home mode is a feature I now miss, especially with certain accessories and multiplayer games that are better enjoyed on a big screen.
There have been several accessories released recently that I would love to use, but many are only compatible with the full Switch model. For example, the ability to detach Joy-Cons opens up a whole world of multiplayer gaming and motion controls that the Lite version just doesn't support. If I’d known then what I know now, I’d have made the extra investment for the added flexibility of a hybrid gaming experience.
Must-Have Accessories for the Nintendo Switch Lite
If you decide to stick with or opt for the Nintendo Switch Lite, there are a few must-have accessories that I highly recommend to enhance your gaming experience:
Larger SD Card: With the limited internal storage of the Switch Lite, a larger SD card is a necessity. I currently use a 1TB card, and it’s been essential for storing all the games I love without having to constantly juggle files or delete content to make space.
Screen Protector: The screen is one of the most important parts of any handheld device, and protecting it should be a priority. A good-quality screen protector will keep your display safe from scratches and scuffs, ensuring that your gaming experience remains clear and vibrant
Protective Case with Enhanced Grips: If you're like me and fit the “big and tall” category, the Switch Lite can feel a bit too small and slim for comfortable extended play. I found a case that not only protects the device but also provides better grips, making it easier and more comfortable to hold for longer gaming sessions.
Angled USB-C Cable: Just like with the Steam Deck, the USB-C charging port on the Switch Lite could have been placed more thoughtfully. A standard cable sticking straight out feels like an accident waiting to happen. I recommend getting a USB-C cable with an angled or bent connector to minimize the risk of damage and keep things more compact.
Vinyl Skin and Stick Caps for Personalization: Lastly, for a touch of personality, consider a vinyl skin to give your Switch Lite a unique look. I went with a stunning design featuring my favorite fire and ice character from my current favorite anime, and I even found joystick caps to match the color theme. This not only makes my device stand out but also feels more like my own.
Final Thoughts
While the Nintendo Switch Lite may be a bit dated compared to newer handhelds or potential upcoming releases, it remains a fantastic mobile gaming platform with an extensive library of games to enjoy. It’s been great for collecting all my favorite JRPGs, and despite some limitations, it's still a highly capable device for gaming on the go.
However, if you’re thinking of getting a Switch and you have the budget, I’d recommend going for the full model over the Lite to take advantage of features like TV docking and broader accessory compatibility. But regardless of which version you choose, with the right accessories—like a large SD card, a protective case, a quality screen protector, and some fun personal touches—you can get the most out of this versatile little console.
